Utah Violates The ADA By Segregating People With I/DD In Sheltered Workshops & Day Programs
On June 18, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) released investigation findings that indicate that Utah’s day services for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) violate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The DOJ alleges that the state relies on sheltered workshops and segregated day programs rather than helping participants find work in the community.
Two different Utah agencies administer the State’s employment and day services: Utah’s vocational rehabilitation agency, the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation; and the Division of Services for People with Disabilities (DSPD).
