Disparities In Post-Acute Stroke Care Discharge Destinations Linked To Insurance Status

After hospitalization for an ischemic stroke, the likelihood of being discharged to facility-based post-acute care was lowest for uninsured individuals. They were 56% less likely to be discharged to a post-acute care facility, and 21% less likely to be discharged to home health/hospice care than insured individuals. The disparity was noted in a review of more than one million hospitalizations for ischemic stroke nationwide in 2017 and 2018.

A disparity was also noted for Hispanic individuals. Hispanic consumers who were covered by Medicare/Medicaid or who were self-pay, were 20% less likely to be admitted . . .
