17% Of People With I/DD Are Working In Community Jobs

In 2022-23, approximately 17% of people with intellectual/developmental disorders (I/DD) were working in paid, competitive, community jobs. Of those without jobs, 44% were unemployed but wanted a paid community job.

Those who work in paid community jobs spend, on average, less than 15 hours per week in those jobs. People who live on their own work in paid community jobs at rates three times higher than those who live in group homes. However, just 25% of all respondents have a goal for employment in their person-centered plan for Medicaid home- and community-based services (HCBS).
