Suicide Rates In Preteen Children Rose 8.2% Per Year From 2008 To 2022

Suicide rates among children between 8 and 12 years increased by 8.2% annually from 2008 to 2022 in the United States, reaching a rate of 5.71 suicide deaths per 1 million preteen children. The suicide death rate was nearly double the rate from 2001 through 2007, of 3.34 deaths per 1 million children. A total of 2,241 preteens died by suicide from 2001 to 2022.

During the 2001 to 2007 period there were 482 preteen deaths attributed to suicide. From 2008 through 2022, there were 3.6 times as many deaths, at 1,759.
