Share Of U.S. Labor Force Age 65+ Increasing, Share Age 25 To 64 Decreasing
The share of the U.S. labor force composed of workers age 65 and older has been increasing, and at the same time the share composed of prime age workers between ages 25 and 64 has slightly decreased. According to research by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), in the mid-1990s, about 84.5% of the labor force was prime working age. By 2023, prime age workers represented 83.1% of the labor force. The gap has been increasingly filled by adults age 65 and older.
