DOJ Finds Kentucky Unnecessarily Institutionalizes Louisville Residents with Serious Mental Illness In Psychiatric Hospitals
On August 27, 2024, the federal Department of Justice (DOJ) notified Kentucky that in the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro area, adults with serious mental illness (SMI) have been unnecessarily segregated in psychiatric hospitals. The DOJ investigation found that in this region the state has failed to provide adequate community-based mental health services in integrated settings, and as a result relied on psychiatric hospitalization, which violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
