During 2022, Nearly 22% Of People Who Died Of A Drug Overdose Had A Comorbid Mental Health Disorder
Of the nearly 108,000 people in the U.S. who died of a drug overdose during 2022, 21.9% had a mental health disorder unrelated to substance use. The most common comorbid disorders were depressive (13%) and anxiety (9%) disorders.
Among those who died of a drug overdose who also had a mental health disorder, 82.2% died of an opioid overdose. Of those who died of an opioid overdose, 75.2% had taken an illegally manufactured fentanyl.
