Worldwide Suicide Rate Three Times Higher For People With Autism
The suicide rate among people diagnosed with autism is nearly three times higher than the general population worldwide. The suicide rate is more than five times higher among those with autism but without intellectual disability (ID). The risk of suicide was higher for both women and men with autism compared to those without autism.
Those with autism had a 186% higher relative risk for suicide mortality. The relative risk varied significantly by sex, with autistic females experiencing a greater risk of suicide (285% higher than non-autistic females) compared to autistic males (113% higher than non-autistic males).
