Deprescribing Antihypertensives For Nursing Home Residents With Dementia Linked To 16% Lower Odds Of Cognitive Decline
For nursing home residents aged 65 years and older with dementia, describing antihypertensive medications was linked to 16% lower odds of worsening cognitive decline. In a two-year comparison that included 12,644 long-term care residents, 12.0% had worsened cognitive function, and 7.7% had improved cognitive function overall. Half the residents participated in a deprescribing intervention, and half were a comparison group. Cognitive function worsened for 10.8% of the deprescribing group and 12.1% of the comparison group.
