Non-Profit Housing Rights Initiative Alleges Widespread Section 8 Discrimination In California

On October 8, 2024, the Housing Rights Initiative filed 112 discrimination complaints against more than 200 California landlords, real estate agents, and brokerage firms (entities) alleging that they illegally refused to rent to people with Housing Choice Section 8 vouchers. The complaints were filed with the California Civil Rights Department. The defendants include 203 entities and their representatives including major real estate brokers such as Coldwell Banker, EXP Realty, Sotheby’s International Realty, and RE/MAX. The discrimination was discovered by an undercover investigation by Housing Rights Initiative.
