Between 2013 and 2022, 15% of 4,724 degree-granting colleges and universities in the United States closed. In total 726 degree-granting institutions closed. About 80% of the closures were for-profit schools; the remainder were structured as non-profits.
During 2024, 18 non-profit institutions announced closures. Between 2013 and 2023, 141 non-profit institutions closed, representing about 8.4% of all non-profit degree-granting colleges and universities. The overall closure statistics and trends were reported by the National Center for Education Statistics.
