Almost 300,000 Older Adults In The United States Died As A Result Of Dementia In 2022
In 2022, 288,436 deaths among U.S. adults age 65 and older were attributed to dementia as the underlying cause of death. Those deaths were from vascular dementia, unspecified dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other degenerative diseases of the nervous system. Deaths in 2022 due to dementia represented 11.9% of the 2.4 million deaths that year among people age 65 and older.
Between 2018 and 2019, age-adjusted death rates for dementia were stable. However, between 2019 and 2020, the rate increased by 10.2%, from 520.1 to 572.9 deaths per 100,000 standard population . . .
