Ohio To Increase Alternative Pathways For Forensic Competency Restoration & Mental Health Diversion
Ohio plans to increase capacity for forensic competency restoration and diversion by adopting recommendations issued by a workgroup appointed by the governor. The recommendations focus on strategies to expand local options for mental health treatment and support, and to free up more beds in the state’s psychiatric hospitals.
The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) is responsible for implementing many of the recommendations, which address improving crisis response; adding new state hospital beds; and increasing workforce capacity through recruiting, retention, and cross training strategies.
