Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Bans Medical Bills From Credit Reports

Starting March 8, 2025, a new federal rule will prohibit consumer credit reporting agencies from including details about medical debt in reports provided to creditors. The rule was issued on January 14, 2025, by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to implement Regulation V of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), concerning medical information. The FCRA prohibits creditors from considering medical information in credit eligibility determinations. Through the final rule, the CFPB is removing a regulatory exception that had permitted creditors to obtain and use information on medical debts notwithstanding this statutory limitation.
