Elevated Risk Of Dementia Found Among Older Adults With Autism
Individuals age 30 and older with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis have an increased prevalence of identified dementia diagnoses. About 8.0% of adults with autism only, and 8.9% of adults with autism and intellectual disability, also have a diagnosis of dementia. Among the general population, the incidence of dementia among adults age 30 to 64 is 0.11%, and about 4.0% among all non-institutionalized adults age 65 and older. The incidence of dementia among all Americans age 65 and older is about 10.9%.
