Half Of Those With Stroke Experienced Post-Stroke Depression Within 12 Months
In the first year after experiencing a stroke, 55% of stroke survivors also experienced depression. About one-third experienced depression during the first three months after the stroke. During the five years after the stroke, 88% of stroke survivors experienced depression.
Based on a longitudinal study spanning 18 years, the prevalence of post-stroke depression at the annual assessments ranged from 31.3% to 41.5%. The cumulative incidence of depression was 59.4%, most of which occurred within five years after the stroke.
