38% Of I/DD Provider Organizations Turned Away/Stopped Accepting Service Referrals In 2023 Due To Staffing Problems

On average, 38.1% of provider organization agencies turned away or stopped accepting new service referrals in 2023 due to direct support professional (DSP) staffing shortages. While seemingly high, this figure is down from 49.7% in 2022. The trend was noted in two annual surveys of organizations providing services for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) called the NCI State of the Workforce for IDD. Of the 26 states (including the District of Columbia) that participated in the most recent survey, Connecticut had the largest percentage (60.4%) of agencies that turned away or stopped accepting new service . . .
