Hospitalization Risk Among Older Adults With Alzheimer’s 2% Higher After One Day Of Extreme Heat
After one day of extreme heat, Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) were 2% more likely to be hospitalized during 2000 through 2018 than when the temperature is at normal levels for their region of the United States. The higher odds of hospitalization corresponded to 0.8 additional hospitalizations for every 1,000 people with ADRD. An extreme heat day was defined as being the hottest 1% of days during the year in any given region.
