Private equity investors are estimated to own 5% to 13% of the approximately 15,000 nursing homes in the United States, according to an analysis of nursing home ownership structures by the Private Equity Stakeholder Project. The report noted that the estimate's wide range is likely due to a lack of transparency about nursing home ownership.
The researchers conducted a literature review of nursing home ownership by profit status and facility ratings for CMS Nursing Home Compare, a tool for people with Medicare or their caregivers who want to choose a Medicare provider (such as physicians, hospitals, nursing homes . . .
