Within Five Years Of LTC Admission, 20% Of Residents Lost Decision-Making Capacity & 13% Became Fully Dependent

Within five years of admission to long-term care (LTC), 20.0% of residents lost decision-making capacity, 13.4% became fully dependent and unable to care for themselves, 7.7% lost communication ability, and 32.8% developed incontinence, according to a recent analysis of incident admissions to LTC facilities in Ontario, Canada between April 1, 2013, and March 31, 2018. Median survival time was shortest for residents who entered the LTC facility in state of total care dependence (45 days) and longest for those with newly developed incontinence of stool or urine (356 days).
