33% Of California Prisoners Released Early During COVID-19 Returned To Prison By Early 2025
Around one-third of prisoners granted early release from California state prisons during the early days of COVID-19 were returned to prison by early 2025, according to an analysis by CalMatters. Between April 2020 and December 2021 the state granted early release to about 14,800 people in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in prisons, By January 31, 2025, 4,600 had been returned to prison.
