Consumption Of Ultraprocessed Foods May Cause More Than 14% Of Preventable Premature Deaths In The United States
Consumption of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) is estimated to be the cause of 14% of the 906,795 premature deaths of people between ages 30 and 69 in the United States from 2017 to 2018, according to a recent study of nutritional patterns in eight countries. The estimate is based on the percentage of the average diet ;that the researchers defined as UPFs: industrial formulations of “highly palatable” foods and beverages made from food-derived substances and food additives with little, if any, whole food.
