Supreme Court Decision Protects Insurance Coverage Of Preventive Care

On June 27, 2025, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld a provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) that requires health plans to cover certain recommended preventive services without cost-sharing. The ruling clarified that the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is subject to the oversight of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The ruling reversed a district court decision that had concluded the USPSTF lacked authority to implement and enforce its recommendations, which meant that the ACA coverage requirement violated federal law.
