About 41% of the 270 active drug shortages in the United States as of March 2025 began in 2022 or earlier, according to a report by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The number of active drug shortages has declined from 323 in the first quarter of 2024.;
According to the report, as of March 31, 2025, the top five drug classes with active shortages are antimicrobials, chemotherapy, central nervous system medications (such as medications for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or pain management), fluids/electrolytes, and hormone agents. ;
