The estimated U.S. death rate in 2024, at 722.0 per 100,000 population, was the lowest since 2020, according to the latest annual provisional data on death rates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2024, a total of 3,072,039 deaths occurred in the United States. The leading causes of death in 2024 were heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injury, the report stated.
