U.S. State & Federal Prison Population Up 2% Between 2022 & 2023
The number of people incarcerated in state and federal prisons combined showed an increase of 2% between year-end 2022 and year-end 2023, rising from 1,230,100 people in 2022 to 1,254,200 in 2023. The previous year, prison populations also increased by 2% between year-end 2021 and year-end 2022. Seven states increased their prison populations by more than 1,000 persons from year-end 2022 to year-end 2023, adding a combined 19,400 persons to the U.S. prison population: Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin.
