New York Implements ‘AI Companion’ Law, Requires User Safeguards
Effective November 5, 2025, companies that provide artificial intelligence (AI) applications that function as a “companion” to New Yorkers must implement new safeguards and safety measures for users. Companies must also provide users with resources to seek assistance for mental health crises. The details were highlighted in a published open letter from Gov. Kathy Hochul to companies that provide AI companions, such as ChatGPT. An AI companion is designed to simulate human relationships with users and can pose as a friend or a romantic partner.
