New CMS LEAD Model Aims To Expand Access To Accountable Care, Improve Health Outcomes
The new Long-term Enhanced Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Design (LEAD) model from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) aims to expand access to accountable care and improve health outcomes.
The model is designed to provide a better way for primary care physicians and specialists to work more closely together to deliver high-quality, coordinated care for consumers. LEAD is a voluntary model that will run from January 1, 2027, through December 31, 2036. ACOs can apply to participate by responding to an upcoming CMS request for applications in March 2026.
