Millions Of People With Disabilities Eligible For ABLE Tax-Advantaged Savings Account
On January 1, 2026, approximately 6 million more people with disabilities became eligible for ABLE accounts, a type of tax-advantaged account available to individuals with disabilities, according to the National Disability Institute.
Updated eligibility requirements enable individuals who become disabled before age 46 to qualify. Previously, individuals were only eligible for this account if their disability began before age 26.
ABLE accounts are tax-free savings tools that can be used to pay for qualified disability expenses. As of January 15, 2026, there were only three states in the U.S. that did not offer their own state ABLE . . .
