Cantata Health Solutions & OPEN MINDS Release Report On New Survey Findings On Digital Engagement In Behavioral Health
New provider survey highlights critical gaps in digital access, onboarding, and sustained engagement across the behavioral health care journey.
[Gettysburg, PA] —Cantata Health Solutions, in collaboration with OPEN MINDS, announced the release of new national survey findings examining how behavioral health and human services organizations are using patient engagement technology and EHR-enabled solutions, and where those tools are falling short.
The survey captures perspectives from provider organizations across the behavioral health landscape and reveals persistent challenges in digital access, patient onboarding, and sustained engagement beyond the clinical encounter. Despite significant investment in digital tools, many organizations continue to experience low utilization, fragmented engagement, and limited insight into how individuals interact with available platforms.
Key findings from the survey show that intake, screening, and assessment remain the most significant friction points in the digital care journey. While patient portals are widely deployed, nearly half of providers report portal usage rates below ten percent, and many lack the data needed to meaningfully measure engagement. Providers also identified ongoing challenges in maintaining engagement between visits and after formal treatment ends, citing competing life demands and loss of daily structure as major barriers to continuity of care.

The survey also highlights growing interest in mobile-friendly, self-guided intake tools, real-time engagement supports, and virtual peer and community-based resources as organizations look to strengthen continuity of care and improve long-term outcomes.
Together, Cantata Health Solutions and OPEN MINDS developed the survey to gather actionable insight from behavioral health leaders on how digital engagement strategies align—and where they fall short—with clinical realities, consumer expectations, and evolving access models.
