Utah, Vermont & Montana Rank Highest In 2025 State Social Mobility Index
Utah, Vermont, and Montana ranked highest among the 50 U.S. states for social mobility, according to a 2025 report by the Archbridge Institute. Social mobility is defined in the report as an individual’s ability to improve economic and social well-being regardless of birth circumstances.
Utah led the nation with a score of 6.44 out of 10.00, followed by Vermont at 6.43 and Montana at 6.31. Wyoming (6.30) and Idaho (6.12) completed the top five. Louisiana ranked last at 3.07, followed by Mississippi (3.24) and Alabama (3.58).
