The Attorneys General of 18 states urged the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to implement new minimum staffing requirements for certain for-profit nursing homes, arguing that targeted quantitative standards could help curb Medicare and Medicaid fraud and protect long-term care residents.

The request comes the same day CMS finalized repeal of its May 2024 Minimum Staffing Standards for Long-Term Care Facilities rule. The repeal, required under provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), prohibits CMS from implementing or enforcing the 2024 staffing rule for 10 years.
