Majority Of Veterans Screened For HUD-VASH Not Referred, Most Non-Referrals Lack Documented Reason

A recent report found that most veterans screened for the Housing and Urban Development–Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program were not referred, and in most of those cases no reason was documented. Between fiscal years 2020 and 2024, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) completed more than 292,000 intake and referral forms, but about 174,000—approximately 60%—did not result in a referral to the program, which provides housing vouchers and case management for veterans experiencing homelessness. Of those non-referrals, roughly 87% lacked any recorded explanation.
