Physicians With Disabilities More Than Twice As Likely To Consider Leaving Medicine, Study Finds

More than one in three physicians with disabilities (36.4%) reported considering leaving medical practice within the prior 12 months, compared to 23.5% of physicians without disabilities, according to a recent study.

After adjusting for demographic and workplace factors—including age, gender, specialty, and hours worked—physicians with disabilities were more likely than their peers without disabilities to report seriously considering leaving medicine.

The analysis included 5,917 active U.S. physicians surveyed in 2022. Of those, 154 physicians (approximately 1 in 38) self-reported having a disability. Physicians with disabilities had a mean age of nearly 60 years . . .
