CMS Proposes New Measures To Strengthen Hospice Oversight & Prevent Fraud
To prevent fraud and inappropriate utilization in the Medicare hospice program, the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is proposing a public scoring system to hold hospice providers accountable. The system, called the Hospice Service and Spending Variation Index (SSVI), is based on indicators of potential inappropriate utilization, quality of care, and compliance concerns.
CMS outlined the proposed system in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Hospice Wage Index and Payment Rate Update and Hospice Quality Reporting Program Requirements Proposed Rule, which includes several strategies to strengthen oversight of the Medicare hospice program.
