Hospital RN Turnover Reaches 17.6%, With Average Replacement Cost Exceeding $60,000 Per Nurse

Hospitals reported a 17.6% turnover rate for registered nurses (RNs) in 2025, according to a recent survey. The average cost of losing and replacing a bedside RN was $60,900 per nurse. Each percentage point increase in a hospital’s RN turnover rate cost hospitals an average of $295,000 in additional hiring and onboarding expenses. Hospitals also reported that hiring an experienced RN took an average of 78 days.

The survey included responses from 527 hospitals across 40 states. Collectively, the hospitals employed 965,886 health care workers, including 262,405 registered nurses.
