Bariatric Surgery Cuts Five-Year Risk Of Kidney Failure, Heart Attack, & Death Among Adults With Chronic Kidney Disease
Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) reduced the five-year risk of kidney failure, dialysis, cardiovascular events, and death among adults with obesity and chronic kidney disease (CKD), according to a retrospective cohort study. Fewer individuals in the MBS group developed end-stage renal disease (ESRD), at 5.9% compared to 11.9% in a matched control group. The MBS group was also less likely to require dialysis, at 4.1% compared to 9.0% of the control group, and less likely to experience adverse cardiovascular outcomes, at 15.5% compared to 27.7%.
