1,440 Nursing Homes Closed Between 2016 & 2025, Offset By 849 Facilities Opening
A total of 1,440 nursing home facilities closed between 2016 and 2025, while 849 new facilities opened during the same period, resulting in a net loss of 591 nursing homes, according to a recent study. Annual closure rates remained relatively stable before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Closures were not evenly distributed across quality levels. One-star facilities accounted for 24.2% of all closures despite representing only 17.1% of nursing homes nationwide, and their share of closures increased over the study period.
