SAMHSA Urges States To Expand Pharmacists’ Authority To Increase Access To Opioid Use Disorder Medications
To expand access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), the federal government is encouraging states to adopt policies that allow pharmacists to prescribe or initiate buprenorphine, a common medication used to treat opioid use disorder. The guidance anticipates opportunities for pharmacists to integrate MOUD treatment into their practices, support collaborative and team-based care, and maintain and expand MOUD-related prescribing.
