19.3% Of U.S. Adults Used Prescription Mental Health Medication In 2024; Women & Younger Adults Had Higher Rates

In 2024, 19.3% of adults in the United States took prescription medication for their mental health, and 14.0% received counseling or therapy from a mental health professional during the previous 12 months, according to a recent report. Prescription medication use referred to medication taken for feelings of anxiety, depression, or other emotional, behavioral, or mental health concerns. Counseling or therapy referred to services received from a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, psychiatric nurse, or clinical social worker.
