Vermont Law Requires Mental Health Professionals To Review AI-Generated Mental Health Advice
A new Vermont law requires mental health professionals to review and approve AI-generated mental health recommendations before they are provided to consumers. The law, H.816, was signed on June 17, 2026. Its goal is to ensure that mental health services are provided by licensed mental health professionals rather than independently by an artificial intelligence (AI) system.
Specifically, the law prohibits any corporation or entity from providing, advertising, or otherwise offering mental health services, including through the use of AI, unless those services are provided by a mental health professional or are part of an approved institutional review board . . .
