California Department of Social Services To Oversee Alameda County’s Child Welfare Department Following Audit Finding Systemic Problems

The Alameda County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is operating under the oversight of the California Department of Social Services (CDSS). The situation was announced on July 29, 2026. The move follows an on-site review CDSS conducted of the county department in March 2026, which found that the agency needs technical assistance and support to comply with state welfare laws and regulations, according to a letter CDSS sent to the department.
