Illinois Nursing Homes Must Refer Residents With SMI For Review Within 72 Hours Of Significant Condition Change
Illinois nursing facilities will be required to refer residents with serious mental illness (SMI) for a resident review within 72 hours after a significant change in the resident's physical or mental condition under House Bill (HB) 4509. The law also requires every person admitted to a nursing home facility with an SMI diagnosis to receive a follow-up visit from the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) or its designee within 60 days after admission. HB 4509 takes effect January 1, 2027.
