In 2025, 50.9% of the estimated 54.6 million U.S. adults with any mental illness (AMI), representing about 27.8 million people, received mental health treatment during the previous 12 months. Among adults with AMI in 2025, 39.5% took prescription medication for a mental health condition, representing about 21.6 million people.
