Maryland Sues Optum & UnitedHealth Group For $380 Million Over Medicaid Behavioral Health Contract

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced on August 27, 2026, that the state had filed a lawsuit against Optum and its parent company, UnitedHealth Group, alleging Optum defrauded the state's Medicaid program through a defective claims-processing system used to administer behavioral health services. In a press release announcing the lawsuit, the Attorney General's Office said the state is seeking approximately $380 million in damages. The lawsuit, filed August 26 in Baltimore City Circuit Court, alleges violations of the Maryland False Claims Act as well as breach of contract, unjust enrichment, and intentional misrepresentation.
