The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved a Nebraska Medicaid demonstration that allows the state to use institutions for mental diseases The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved a Nebraska Medicaid demonstration allowing the state to reimburse for short-term treatment in institutions for mental diseases (IMDs) for beneficiaries ages 21 to 64 diagnosed with serious mental illness (SMI) or serious emotional disturbance (SED). CMS approved the amendment on August 14, 2026, and the demonstration will remain in effect through June 30, 2030. Implementation is pending CMS approval of Nebraska's SMI/SED Implementation Plan.
