About One In Five U.S. Youth Use AI Chatbots For Mental Health Advice
Nearly one in five (19.2%) U.S. adolescents and young adults ages 12 to 21 reported using artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for mental health advice in a November 2025 survey. The researchers estimated that this represents approximately 8.2 million young people nationwide of the approximately 42.8 million in this age group. Among those who used chatbots for mental health advice, 63.3% did not tell anyone about it, suggesting that parents, educators, and health care professionals may be unaware when AI-generated advice is influencing young people’s mental health decisions.
