12 Counties Across Nine States To Pilot Behavioral Health Interventions In Criminal Justice Systems
Twelve counties across nine states will pilot new approaches to behavioral health interventions for people involved in the criminal justice system from September 2026 through December 2027. Through the Counties Aligning Health & Safety initiative, led by the Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center, participating counties will identify and implement interventions aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration for people with behavioral health needs. The initiative focuses on the period between jail booking and adjudication, with support for improving coordination among courts, jails, and community behavioral health provider organizations.
