Missouri Insurance Department Reports Autism Insurance Mandate Increased Health Plan Claims Cost By 0.2% Since 2011

Missouri’s autism insurance coverage mandate has increased health plan total claims by 0.2% since going into effect on January 1, 2011. In 2013, 3,070 individuals received covered diagnosis and treatment for an autism-related condition; the value of these claims totaled $8.3 million, with $3.8 million in claims for applied behavior analysis (ABA). Total claims costs for all 1.3 million covered individuals were $4 billion in 2013. For each member month of autism coverage in 2013, total autism-related claims amounted to $0.48 per member per month (PMPM).
