Adverse Events in Skilled Nursing Facilities: National Incidence among Medicare Beneficiaries (OEI-06-11-00370)
In this report released March 4, 2014, by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the OIG conducted a two-stage medical record review for a sample of 653 Medicare beneficiaries discharged from hospitals to SNFs for post-acute care with a stay of 35 days or less that ended in August 2011. This review found that about 22% of Medicare beneficiaries admitted to SNFs experience an adverse event; and another 11% experience an event causing temporary harm requiring medical intervention.
